• HITRANS’ area of responsibility covers approximately 50 per cent of the Scottish land mass.
  
  
• The area has 410,000 residents, 10 per cent of Scotland’s population, and more than 80 island communities.
  
  
• With Shetland (which has its own transport partnership) the area includes most of Scotland’s ferry services.
  
  
• The area has 8664 miles of roads, about 25 per cent of Scotland’s road network.
  
  
• It has 63 railway stations – about 20 per cent of the Scottish total.
